More than just "new features." Synapse 3.0 is a system that better supports how intelligence analysis happens under pressure.
For the past decade, Synapse, The Vertex Project's, central intelligence system transformed the way analysts visualize, understand, and draw actionable conclusions from large data sets. Working in close partnership with customers and community, Vertex has continually evolved Synapse's capabilities by absorbing new data types, workflows, and investigative demands. Our latest update, Synapse v3 applies those ten years of experience to bring even more clarity, flexibility, and usability to Synapse. The result is a Synapse that is simpler to navigate, easier to use, and better aligned with how real-world analysis actually happens, ensuring we can support even the most demanding and complex investigations both now and in the future.
At The Vertex Project, we have a "no breaking changes" policy for major software versions (such as Synapse v2.x). This means we can add features and expand capabilities via minor version updates and fixes, but we can't introduce changes or improvements that would break any existing functionality. With the release of Synapse 3.0, we were able to revise the software and implement all our saved-up improvements - from architecture and engineering to the data model and UI - that we were unable to introduce in 2.0. This includes many features specifically requested by customers and our community.
What are the key new features or improvements?
If we listed them all here this document would go on infinitely 😅 Please refer to our v3.0.0 changes docs as we continue to roll out new features and improvements.
What is included in the Beta release?
All of the open-source Synapse services and their newly introduced commercial counterparts will be in the first beta release. Subsequent beta releases will add additional Advanced Power-Ups (like Synapse-Fileparser and Optic) incrementally building to the v3.0 release which will include all of the open-source and commercial Synapse service images.
The beta releases are designed to give users the opportunity to begin porting their own power-ups and automation logic based on the updated data model and some additional Storm features.
What problems does it solve for customers?
The data model improvements lend greater flexibility, accuracy, and consistency in representing various types of data and navigating the graph.
Optic updates help analysts view and interact with data more easily - more transparency around edges, tombstoning makes deleting things from an underlying view is safer because you can now do it in a fork and "preview” the change before merging.
Optic updates also include quality of life updates, like ability to select different color schemes if that helps you visually, etc.
Platform stability and efficiency - better more efficient performance.
Is there documentation available?
Synapse v3 documentation can be found here. The documentation is also Beta. We are in the process of updating the v2 documents to include all of the v3 changes.
I have an existing Synapse v2 demo stack, will it get updated to 3.0 Beta?
No. Synapse v2 demo stacks cannot be updated to v3 Beta (manually or automatically). Once v3 demo stacks are available, you can request one here.
Who is eligible to participate in the Beta?
Everyone! (who wants to). As usual, the commercial docker images will only be available to Synapse Enterprise customers, but the open-source images will be publicly available.
Those who want a sneak preview of Synapse 3.0’s new features and capabilities or to begin preliminary testing and planning for migration.
How long is the Beta timeline?
The Beta Release of 3.0 will begin on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.
We are anticipating releasing a new Beta weekly with the first General Availability release of Synapse v3.0.0 at the end of July 2026.
How will customers know when each phase is available?
Email Communications
Slack messages in the #synapse-releases Channel
Updates made on the Synapse 3.0 landing page
How do customers provide feedback during beta?
Please refer to the #synapse-v3-beta Slack channel to provide feedback during Beta.
What level of stability/support can beta users expect?
Like all aspects of the Beta release of Synapse v3, any v2 -> v3 migration scripts are considered beta / preliminary and may change for final release. The scripts can be used to test migration of internal systems but should not be used in a production environment.
Core Synapse components (Optic, Cortex, Axon, etc.), some, but not all Power-Ups.
The data model is stable with respect to breaking changes (that is, we will not change the 3x data model in ways that are incompatible with the Beta release), except in the unlikely event we identify a major issue with the model (we have been going over it with a fine-toothed comb). As always, we will make future changes that are additive or improve the model without creating backwards incompatibility.
Is there a deadline for existing customers to migrate to 3.0?
No, there is no cutoff date for migration. The Vertex Project will continue to support Synapse v2 in maintenance mode (bug fixes, critical enhancements) so we can focus on expanding the capabilities of Synapse 3.0 and assisting customers with v2 -> v3 migrations. Our expectation is that it will take 1-2 years to move all customers from v2 to v3.
What happens to existing data, settings, and configurations during the upgrade?
Users are responsible for:
Tidying up to ensure no currently deprecated properties are populated in their v2 instance.
Testing / porting all internal automation (Power-Ups, orchestration, triggers / cron / macros, Node Actions, saved / stored Storm queries, etc.)
Migration script will automatically migrate supported (non-deprecated) 2x data -> 3x.
Note: our migration script has no awareness of any custom data model extensions (e.g., custom forms, properties, etc.) Users are responsible for migrating these.
Data that does not map cleanly from 2.x to 3.x will be put aside for review in our lost and found
Are there any integrations, APIs, or third-party tools that may be affected?
The Vertex Project will continue to port all existing Vertex-authored Power-Ups to Synapse v3. Some Power-Ups will not be immediately available for v3.0 as we continue this process.
Synapse Enterprise customers can request support for assistance in porting custom (internal) Power-Ups from v2 -> v3.
Send us a brief message and we'd be happy to assist you.
